Nervous Dental Patients

It is widely reconised that good oral hygiene coupled with regular visits to the dentist is essential for ensuring overall good oral health. Failure to maintain such a regime often results in teeth, gum and mouth problems.

However, for nervous patients who suffer with dental anxiety, a visit to the dentist can be a daunting task and something that they try to avoid. However, such avoidance can result in a relatively small oral issue becoming a major problem as time progresses.

The Stone Dental team is sympathetic about these feelings and will give you tried and tested advice on ways to overcome dental fear. A number of techniques exist for helping those who suffer with dental anxiety to overcome their fear:

  • First and foremost, good communication! - our experience shows that keeping a patient fully informed about treatment options and progress goes a long way to allaying their concerns. All clinical staff at Stone Dental are absolutely aware of the need for positive communication and we ensure that this is an integral part of all treatment programmes.
  • The use of mild sedatives - sometimes it is appropriate to use mild sedatives for some patients and we will assess this during consultation
  • Hypnotherapy - this technique has been shown to be successful in certain circumstances
  • Use of "minimally invasive" dental techniques. We always endeavour to use only the minimum amount of treatment necessary and employ only those dental materials which preserve as much of the original tooth material as possible. We also try to ensure that our treatments and materials absolutely minimise the need for future replacements or repairs.
